About Our Ethically-Produced Goods
Each item in our shop was made by hand and we are proud to carry many items that are fair trade. According to the Fair Trade Federation:
“Fair trade is an approach to business and to development based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks to create greater equity in the international trading system. Fair trade supports farmers and craftspeople in developing countries who are socially and economically marginalized, [who] often face steep hurdles in finding markets and customers for their goods.”
My Sanctuary Shop supports artisans and their communities by paying fair wages, providing sustainable jobs, and protecting the environment. We’ve chosen to carry products by companies that are members of Chicago Fair Trade, the Fair Trade Federation, and the World Fair Trade Organization.
We have also partnered with many local makers who share our mission. Their products are also made by hand, using ethically-sourced materials. (We’ve also chosen to share the work of a few makers who do not fit the “global” or the “local” criteria, but they support our mission and their work felt like a good fit for our shop. This is the beauty of small business: we make the rules -- and we can also make exceptions where it makes sense!)
